Rédingote

French, from English "riding coat"

A longish, heavy coat with a double lapel that became fashionable when English fashion invaded France during the 1770s and 80s, for riding and travelling.

The rédingote was adapted by women to form a double-collared robe - not a coat - in the mid-1780s.
