Robe

Generic term for a female top garment that goes from shoulder to ground, more or less open at the front. The gaps are filled by a stomacher or the corset itself, and the jupe.

In contrast, not so affluent people wore jackets (caraco, casaquin) over the jupe.

Different kinds of robe include: manteau, contouche, robe Ó l'anglaise, Ó la franšaise, Ó la turque, Ó la polonaise, lÚvite, robe en chemise, robe battante, robe volante, ß la circassienne and may others, which are often only a sub-species of one of the aforementioned kinds.
