Robe à la française from the inside, c. 1760

The robe has a wide strip of white linen down the front edge, stiffening the edge and probably also holding pleats and robings in place. The top part is mounted on a linen bodice with a centre back lacing to adjust the width, and centre front lacing to close. The stomacher is inserted into the gap between the top fabric and lining bodice, thus hiding the lacing.
